During the 1980s, through a decision
of the Minister of Culture and Art, the District Museum in Konin acted
as Archeological Conservation Body. In order to implement charter
tasks, i.e. rescue research, intervention work (accidental finds)
and legal protection of archeological objects, the Archeological Emergency
Department was created. During the next decade, after a state administrative
reform, the Department cooperated with a newly-formed Provincial Office
for the Protection of Historic Sites and Monuments in Konin, preparing
documents and opinions in order to establish legal protection of selected
objects, giving consent to spatial development plans and plans for
location of investments. It also acted as a conservation supervisory
body for numerous archeological expeditions conducing rescue research
along the A2 highway and fuel pipelines. Either on its own or in cooperation
with the Archeological Department of the District Museum it carried
out rescue, intervention and surface research.
A created archived included not only research findings (about 12,000
archival items) but also cartographic and photographic documentation
of the most interesting objects (settlements, cemeteries, historic
towns).
Presently, the Department has many functions, the most important of
which is carrying out archeological rescue activities (archeological
supervision, rescue research, inventory activities) in the areas endangered
by new investments (mines, land improvement work, storage reservoir,
telecommunications, etc). Areas of its activity cover not only the
territories where objects recognized as a result of earlier research
of AZP, but also towns of old historical origin, where in the course
of excavations, accidental finds can be expected, which enrich our
knowledge about the history of the region. Besides, the staff of the
Department secure reported accidental finds.
Apart from purely archeological work, the Department promotes archeology
or protection of historical sites among the youth, the media, and
self-governmental authorities. The constantly updated archive helps
the young in their education when they need to write papers concerning
the oldest history of the Konin region.
We offer our services to districts and investors when they wish to
create local land development plans or future investment location
plans. Opinions included in such reports allow to limit both the construction
costs of new production plants and destructive effects of their establishment.
