A
large numismatic collection, which is presently made up of about 10,000
coins, banknotes, medals, and decorations mainly from Poland but also
from countries historically related to Poland, was created in 1967.
It was then that quite a casual collection of about 500 coins and
banknotes was taken over from the former public PTTK Museum.
Among the most significant exhibits are: Polish Bolesława
Krzywousty's brakteat (currency unit), Polish King Kazimierz the Great's
Cracow Grosz (currency unit), silver talar (currency unit) of the
Vasa Dynasty Polish Kings, as well as first Polish banknotes dating
back to the period of the Kościuszko Insurrection.
In addition, the collection contains coins from the post-partition
period of the Polish history - the period of the Grand Duchy of Warsaw,
the Congress Kingdom of Poland, and the November Uprising of 1830.
Another
interesting group of items includes coins and banknotes from the years
between the First and Second World Wars. The most significant among
them are specimen of banknotes. A large part of the numismatic collection
consists of almost 3,000 exhibits representing substitute banknotes
dating back to the years 1914-1923 and used in the territories presently
belonging to Poland, Austria, Germany, and Russia.
The foreign numismatic collection also includes coins of the Polish
Kings struck in other countries as well as currencies of Russia, Prussia,
and Austria from the period between 1795-1918.
Moreover, the numismatic room houses the collection of coins gathered
in the course of archeological research. Of significant value are
finds coming from Stare Miasto (a collection of 323 whole and 4 fragmentarily
preserved coins from the church in Stare Miasto) and 15 coins from
the church in Królików.
Medals and decorations form a separate collection made up of over
600 exhibits. The number includes Polish medals from the period between
the 17th century and present times, Polish decorations from the period
between the First and Second World War, an impressive collection of
Polish medals for achievements in sport dating back to the first half
of the 20th century, as well as objects related to the Konin region.
